On a gorgeous afternoon, few things are more enjoyable than hopping in your Jeep Wrangler and heading to the great outdoors. Whether you want to feel one with nature as you hike a scenic trail or take the family for a relaxing picnic, there’s a park suited for you. Check out these three state parks near Redlands, CA.

Discover Nature With Your Jeep: 3 Great State Parks Near Redlands, CA

1. Mount San Jacinto State Park

Mount San Jacinto State Park offers a peaceful escape from the hustle of everyday life. Trails weave throughout the 14,000-acre park and range from easy to challenging. Desert View Trail (1.5-miles) and Discovery Nature Trail (1.3-mile) are beginner-friendly options. Both trailheads are accessible via a paid tram service, and you’ll want to book your seats ahead of time. The tram and the trails feature mountain views perfect enough for a postcard.

Athletes and experienced hikers will be excited to venture onto more challenging trails such as the Caramba Overlook (12.9-miles) and Leatherneck Ridge (9.4-miles). In addition, there are numerous ways to reach San Jacinto Peak, where you can see for miles. In the winter, a show-shoeing route is open that takes you straight to the top. Day permits to Mount San Jacinto State Park are free and available at the park headquarters and Long Valley Ranger Station.

2. California Citrus State Historic Park

Adventurers seeking an educational experience will adore California Citrus State Historic Park. Visitors can enjoy the activity center, picnic areas, amphitheater, and demonstration groves, all designed to replicate a 1900s park. Over half of this 250-acre park is devoted to citrus groves, providing visitors a chance to witness what was once California’s critical contribution to the agricultural industry.

During the summer months, guided grove tours run at 10:00 am Friday through Sunday. The Citrus Interpretive Trail (1.4-miles) is a paved pathway that runs through the park and takes anywhere from a half-hour to an hour to complete. You’ll have difficulty finding a sweeter-smelling trail, as the citrus trees provide a pleasing aroma during the growing season. Before heading out, you’ll want to check their website, as occupancy is limited due to Covid-19 restrictions.

3. Chino Hills State Park

With over 45 trails to choose from, you could spend a week in Chino Hills State Park and still not explore them all. Birdwatchers, hikers, mountain bikers, runners, and equestrians will find the 12,452-acre park perfect for outdoor adventures. The numerous trail options available at Chino Hills State Park make the location ideal for a day trip, although you may have difficulty picking which picturesque trail to take.

We recommend Bane Canyon Loop Trail (5.8-miles), as this winding path through the ridge and canyon allows you to appreciate the majesty of the surrounding mountains. Or Telegraph Canyon Road (11.8-miles) if you’re looking for a more lengthy excursion. You’ll want to dress for the heat and carry plenty of water in the summer months, as most trails have little to no tree coverage. Parking is $10 for the day and $3 hourly.
